Lloyd performed unbelievably during the WWC, but people are only remembering her for her performance during the final game, which isn't representative of her performance as a whole. Before the WWC Morgan was injured, and only came in to play for their third game, even then, she had to play partial time, not the whole game, at risk of her injury getting worse (and she just recently announced she's sitting out again, with injury, so she clearly didn't rest enough). Morgan got to where she is (face of the USWNT) because she's been a consistent player ever since she showed up. She was injured during the WWC and therefore couldn't perform at her best. The cover shouldn't show the best performance in a tournament that happened only a month ago (true, it's the biggest in the world), but of the player as a whole. Morgan has been phenomenal for years now, so she worked hard to get where she is. She's also hot as fuck. So there's that.
Well that's the thing. A lot of people are reacting to Carli Lloyd the same way that the US reacted to Tim Howard in the 2014 world cup. She's an unbelievable player. But all of the US team's women are. She's not the best. It's hard to classify a "best", they're only as good as the whole team, and the whole team works together so smoothly. It's hard to know that if you caught the last game or two of the WWC this year and nothing more. I'm not trying to be that "I know more than everyone" asshole, but I've been a huge fan of the USWNT for about 6 years now, and I watch all the games fut16coin can (when they're on TV, which wasn't much, but hopefully that'll change!) and I can safely say that outside of the WWC this year, Lloyd wasn't a goddess. Again, she's fantastic. But they all are, and she doesn't always stand out. Morgan has been the face of the USWNT since their last olympics, and because of that EA definitely wanted someone more familiar on their cover. I agree, it's someone that we all know, and she's been consistently valuable to the team.
And again, this is a moot point here, but she's also insanely attractive.
Yeah exactly, when I think of American football (mens and womans) I think of Alex Morgan. Carli Lloyd is probably not one of the people I would name when it comes to American football when it really comes down to it, and thats what EA Sports wants, a recognizable face that even the most casual fan will recognize.
Honestly Carli Lloyd also somewhat reminds me of TJ Oshie from the 2014 American Mens hockey team. Played big at the right place in the right time, but other than that hasnt really been that "stand out player" anywhere else.
That's a great analogy for her. I do want her to be seen as one of the greats, because she is. But like I said before you can only have so many "stars" on a team, regardless of how good every single player is. When you think US Women's soccer (or football, to each their own) you think Morgan, Wambach, and Solo (unfortunately, she's a bad person) as the "stars" of the squad. It's just hard for the general public to remember so many names from one team, the team needs a group of faces that everyone knows, and that space is already filled by the few I mentioned before. But Lloyd knows she's a great player and so do the "hardcore" fans of the USWNT, so that still counts for something I think.
You're just looking at the shallow end where people are bitching about Messi being on every cover and Alex Morgan being too mainstream for the hip crowd that pretends to enjoy Women's soccer when it comes around once every 4 years then mysteriously vanishes. It's like a public pool. A lot of kids shit in the shallow end but you have to look deeper to get to the part where the grownups swim.
